Question

How many mitosis and meiosis occur in the process of oogenesis?

Open in App
Solution

Mitosis and meiosis occur in the process of oogenesis

  1. The creation of a mature female gamete is called oogenesis.
  2. It starts at the female's embryonic growth stage.
  3. Each ovary produces approximately a million oogonia (gamete mother cells).
  4. Mitosis increases the amount of these oogonia. After the baby is born, no more of these are added.
  5. These begin to divide and enter prophase I of meiosis, where they are momentarily stopped.
  6. Primary oocytes are the name given to these oocytes.
  7. The primary follicle is made up of a layer of granulosa cells that surrounds each primary oocyte.
  8. Only 70,000-90,000 of them remain in each ovary by the time a female reaches puberty.
  9. Secondary follicles are those that are surrounded by extra follicular layers and later transform into tertiary follicles.
  10. Within the tertiary follicle, the primary oocyte increases in size and completes its initial meiotic division.
  11. A haploid secondary oocyte and a polar body are formed as a result of this process.
  12. The secondary oocyte transforms the tertiary follicle into a mature Graafian follicle.
  13. Unless the ovum Congress comes into contact with a sperm, the second meiotic division does not occur.
  14. The sperm enters the ovum during fertilization and marks the end of the secondary oocyte's meiotic division.
  15. A haploid ovum and a second polar body are formed after the second meiotic division.
  16. As a result, oogenesis is normally a one-mitosis, half-meiosis process, but when oogenesis is followed by fertilization, it is a one-mitosis, one-meiosis process.
