Solution

Muscles involved in breathing

  1. From a functional aspect, the rib cage, diaphragm, and abdominal muscles are all involved in the breathing.
  2. Each muscle group works on the chest walls and compartments, namely the diaphragm-apposed rib cage, the abdomen, and the lung-apposed rib cage.
  3. The diaphragm (dome-shaped muscle) is the major muscle for breathing.
  4. When engaged in physical activity, the intercostal muscles (muscles found between the ribs) help with breathing.
  5. When the rate of breathing is fast, the abdominal muscles aid in exhaling.
