Solution
The correct option is B 4 Habitat is a living place for an organism. It meets all the environmental conditions an organism needs to survive.
For the survival of the organisms both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components are required.
Vegetation (growing plants) in any area is largely affected by the quality of the soil, sunlight and availability of water. The nature and property of the soil depends on the weathering of rocks, climate and the process of soil formation.
Extent of vegetation in any area depend on the following factors :
Topography – It is the physical characteristics of the area like land, river, mountain etc. The presence of mountains can create barriers and can alter wind and precipitation patterns in the area. Any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the Earth is called precipitation. For example, At higher altitudes, mountains support vegetation which can survive in such cold conditions like conifers.
Minerals – Amount of macro and micronutrients in soil tends to vary. Minerals are required for plant growth and their deficiency can cause diseases and stunted growth. For example, potassium increases crop yields and its deficiency causes chlorosis (yellowing) between leaf veins.
pH - It plays a major role in growth of plants. It affects soil bacteria, nutrient availability and soil structure.
Percolation - It is the movement of the water through the soil. Soil with high percolation is more suited for the growth of crops as it increases the oxygen absorption of soil and make it oxygen rich with proper air spaces for roots.
Figure : Factors affecting vegetation in an area
Fishes, animals and birds does not support the growth of plants in an area instead they are dependent on plants (producer) directly or indirectly for their food. Hence option b is correct.
