Question

How many protons, neutrons, and electrons are present in an atom of Aluminum-27?

Open in App
Solution

Number of subatomic particles in Aluminum:

  • Aluminium-27 represents the atomic mass of one Aluminium atom is 27.
  • The atomic mass of any element is represented by A, thus for AluminiumA=27.
  • The atomic number is represented by Z, Aluminum has an atomic number Z=13
  • To calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons:
  • The number of protons: The number of protons in an atom is equal to the atomic number of that element. So, for the Aluminium-27 number of protons is 13.
  • The number of neutrons: The number of neutrons is always equal to atomic mass minus atomic number i.eA-Z. Therefore, the number of neutrons in Aluminium-27 is27-13=14.
  • The number of electrons: The number of electrons in any neutral atom is equal to the number of protons in the same atom, so, in Aluminium-27, the number of electrons is13.

Hence, the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons in Aluminium-27 is 13, 13, and 14 respectively.
