Reflex arc:

  1. The instant, involuntary response towards a stimulus is referred to as reflex action.
  2. The brain does not voluntarily control the reflex action.
  3. It is controlled by the spinal cord and its associated nerves.
  4. Sensory nerves carry the response from the receptor organ to the spinal cord.
  5. Motor nerves bring the response of the spinal cord to the receptor organ.
  6. There are two different types of reflex arcs:
    1. Somatic reflex arc: Such reflex arcs affect the skeletal muscles.
    2. Autonomic reflex arc: This reflex arc affects the internal organs i.e. smooth muscles.
