Question

How most of the carbon dioxide is transported to the lungs?

Open in App
Solution

Transportation of carbon dioxide:

  1. All living creatures generate the energy they need to survive through the process of respiration.
  2. Cellular respiration is another name for this since it takes place within cells.
  3. Normally, two gases—oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
  4. Carbon dioxide is expelled and oxygen is taken up by the cells.
  5. Carbon dioxide is primarily transported in the dissolved form because hemoglobin has very less affinity towards carbon dioxide.
  6. In the dissolved form, carbon dioxide is left in the alveoli of the lungs, and oxygen is taken from there by the hemoglobin molecules.
  7. Hemoglobin carries 20-25% of carbon dioxide as carbamino-hemoglobin.
  8. 70% of the carbon dioxide is transported in the form of bicarbonate ions and the rest 7% is in the dissolved state through plasma.
  9. The carbon dioxide binding with hemoglobin is due to its partial pressure which is high at the tissue level.
  10. The partial pressure of CO2 in the lungs will be more than that of the partial pressure of CO2 outside which causes exhalation.
  11. The partial pressure of O2 in the atmosphere will be more than that of the partial pressure of O2 in the lungs which causes inhalation.
