Question

How much copper can be obtained from 100g of copper sulphate (CuSO4)?

Open in App
Solution

CuSO4 + 2 e- → Cu (s)+(SO4)2-

As, 1 mole of CuSO4 provides 1 mole of Cu.

Molar mass of CuSO4 =159.5 g
Molar mass of Cu=63.5 g
Hence, 159.5 g of CuSO4 → 63.5 g of Cu

⇒ 1 g of CuSO4 → (63.5 / 159.5) g of Cu
⇒ 1 g of CuSO4 → 0.398 g of Cu

∴ 100 g of CuSO4 → 0.398 × 100 g of Cu

Hence, 100 g of CuSO4 will give 39.81 g of copper.
