Question

How much electric charge is required to produce 20.0 g of calcium from molten CaCl2?

Open in App
Solution

20g of Calcium corresponds to 2040=0.5moles of Calcium.
Half Cell reaction for reduction:-
Ca2+(aq)+2eCa(s).
1 mole of Ca is produced by passage of 2 mole electrons .
0.5 mole of Ca is produced by passage of 0.5×2=1molee
Charge on 1 mole electron is Faraday.
|therefore To produce 20g of Ca from molten CaCl2 , 1 Faraday of electric charge is required.
