Question

How much heat will be required to make 2kg of calcium carbide (CaC2) according to the following reaction?
CaO(s)+3C(s)CaC2+CO(g)
The heats of formation of CaO(s),CaC2(s) and CO(g) are 151.6,14.2,26.4kcal respectively.

Solution

ΔH=ΔHof(products)ΔHof(reactants)
=[ΔHo(CaC2)+4ΔHo(CO)][ΔHo(CaO)+2ΔHo(C)]
[14.226.4][151.6+3×0]
=111.0kcal
For formation o f64g of CaC2 111.0kcal of heat is required.
So, heat required for making 2000g of
CaC2=111.064×2000=3468.75kcal
