How much of moisture content in waste pile is ideal for composting?
50%
Composting proceeds best at a moisture content of 50% by weight. At lower moisture levels, microbial activity is limited and hence the composting either will be slow or not take place at all. At higher levels, the process is likely to become anaerobic and foul-smelling and will not get converted into compost. Anaerobic process takes place where microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen.
