Question

How oxygen can be prepared from

  1. Catalytic decomposition
  2. From potassium chlorate
  3. From water

Open in App
Solution

Catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide:

  • In the laboratory, oxygen is prepared by catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide inH2O2 which manganese oxide MnO2 is used as a catalyst to produce Hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.

H2O2(l)MnO2H2(g)+O2(g)

Thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate:

  • When potassium chlorate is heated in the presence of manganese oxide then it releases oxygen along with a by-product potassium chloride.

2KClO3(s),MnO22KCl(s)+3O2(g)

Electrolysis decomposition of water:

  • When acidified water is subjected to electrolysis, chemical decomposition takes place which further evolves oxygen and hydrogen gases.

2H2O(l)electrolysis2H2(g)(Cathode)+O2(g)(Anode)
