Protochordate are an informal category of animals (i.e., not a legitimate taxonomic group) used to designate invertebrates that are closely related to vertebrates. These animals are primitive chordates.
They are also known as Acraniata.
These are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic and possess coelom.
They may not have a proper notochord present at all stages in their lives or for the entire length of the animal.
Example: - Balanoglossus and Amphioxus.
Proto chordates are further classified into two sub-phyla namely,
Subphylum Urochordata - Urochordatesare small marine animals with larvae that swim freely and adults that attach themselves to the ocean floor. Example: - Selpa
Sub-phylum Cephalochordata - Cephalochordatesare segmented marine animals that possess elongated bodies containing a notochord extending the length of the body from head to tail. Example: - Amphioxus.
