Soil is classified on two different bases:

Based on the composition and nature of the soil
On this basis, the soil is classified into six types:

  1. Alluvial soil – It formed by deposits of rivers
  2. Black soil – It contains humus
  3. Red soil – It contains Iron oxides
  4. Mountain soil – It contains sand, shales, clay, stones, and limestone.
  5. Desert soil – It is rich in minerals.
  6. Laterite soil – It contains a hydrated oxide of aluminum and iron.

Based on the amount and type of particles in the soil

  1. Sandy soil – It majorly consists of sand and some amount of silt and clay.
  2. Clayey soil – It contains a large amount of clay and a little humus and slit.
  3. Loamy soil – It consists of clay, sand, and humus.
