Question

How to calculate the equivalent weight of Potassium carbonate?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Writing the equivalent weight formula

Equivalent weight is calculated by dividing the molecular weight by n factor.

Mathematically it is given as,

Equivalentweight=Molecularweightn

Step 2: Calculating equivalent weight of Potassium carbonate

Potassium carbonate have molecular formula K2CO3

n- factor is the total positive or negative charge on salts.

For K2CO3,n=2

Since 2 moles of Potassium ion are formed; n factor will be 2.

K2CO3Potassiumcarbonate2K+Potassiumions+CO32-Carbonateions

Molecular weight of Potassium carbonate = 138g

Equivalent weight

=1382=69g

Therefore, equivalent weight of potassium carbonate is 69g.
