If a person has gold in the form of ornaments or bars which weighs more than 85 grams he has to pay a sum of 2.5% from it as zakat to that gold. In Islam offering Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. The nisab threshold for gold is 85g (or 7.2 Tolas / Boris’ / Voris’) Diamonds and gemstones (pearls, sapphires, rubies, corals, etc) are also exempt from Zakat.
