Question

How to concentrate an ore of tin containingFeCrO4?

Open in App
Solution

Magnetic separation

  • Magnetic Separation is the most common technique, used for the separation of mixtures.
  • Magnetic Separators use magnets to attract magnetic materials or magnetically susceptible particles from ores or mixtures from non-magnetic particles.

Diagram of magnetic separation process

Concentrate ore of tin.

  • An ore of tin-containing FeCrO4 is concentrated by magnetic separation.
  • FeCrO4 is ferromagnetic material due to presence of iron.
  • Magnetic separation attracts FeCrO4 through their magnets and separate them from ore of tin .

Iron ores are attracted towards the magnet, hence, non-magnetic impurities can be separated from them using magnetic separation.
