Discovery:
● Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 when he noticed that one of his experimental cultures of Staphylococci, in an unwashed petri dish, was contaminated with mould.
● The region around the mould was clear without any bacterial colonies.
He concluded that the chemicals produced by the moulds are preventing the growth of bacteria. ● He named the chemical penicillin after the mould, Penicillium notatum.
