Question

How water is drawn up the xylem vessel due to transpiration pull?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration pull:

  1. The transpirational pull is caused by evaporation from the mesophyll layer surface in leaves to their surroundings through stomata on the leaves.
  2. The suction force (negative pressure) created by transpiration from the leaves' surface draws water from the soil and roots through the xylem.
  3. Water is sucked up as a result of the xylem vessel.
  4. Due to the appearance of capillary action, transpirational pull moves water from roots to leaves.
  5. Cohesion and adhesion are the primary driving principles behind capillary action.
  6. Cohesion is the force of attraction between water molecules, whereas adhesion is the attractive force acting on the xylem's surface.
