Solution

Acidic Nature: 2 Marks
Equations: 3 Marks

Nitric acid behaves as a strong monobasic acid. It ionizes in an aqueous solution to a very great extent.
HNO3(aq) H++NO3
The presence of hydrogen ion imparts the acidic property to the aqueous solution of nitric acid.

The following reactions show the acidic nature of nitric acid:
(a) It reacts with basic oxides to form salt and water.
CaO+2HNO3(dil.)Ca(NO3)2+H2O

(b) It reacts with metal hydroxide or basic hydroxides to form salt and water.
NaOH+HNO3(dil.)NaNO3+H2O

(c) It reacts with carbonates and bicarbonates to release CO2.
Na2CO3+2HNO3(dil.)2NaNO3+H2O+CO2
