How will you prepare hydrogen gas in the laboratory ? State three precautions necessary for the collection of hydrogen.
To prepare hydrogen gas in the laboratory following procedure is followed.
Procedure: Place a few pieces of granulated zinc in a flat-bottomed flask fitted with an air-tight cork having two holes. Through one hole pass a thistle funnel having a long stem, and through the other, a delivery tube. Pour dilute sulphuric acid through the thistle funnel.
A brisk reaction takes place and hydrogen is produced with effervescence. When all the air from the apparatus has been expelled, collect the gas.
Reactants used in this procedure: Granulated zinc, and dilute sulphuric acid.
Reaction:
A brisk reaction takes place and hydrogen is produced with effervescence. When all the air from the apparatus has been expelled, collect the gas.
Three precautions are necessary for the collection of hydrogen:
1. The apparatus should be air-tight.
2. The lower end of the thistle funnel must dip in dil. sulphuric acid otherwise gas will also escape through the thistle funnel.
3. Do not bring any flame near the apparatus as hydrogen is highly inflammable.
