Open in App
Solution

Filtration: Filtration is defined as the process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid by causing the latter to pass through the pores of a membrane, called a filter.

Evaporation: The process of separating any substance from its solution by removing water is called evaporation.

An impure sample of common salt containing some chalk can be separated by:

  1. It can be separated by mixing the sample with water and filtered.
  2. Chalk powder is a heterogeneous mixture(non-uniform composition), it can be separated by filtration using filter paper
  3. Salt gets dissolved in water, it is a homogenous mixture (uniform composition throughout the bulk).
  4. Chalk will be separated and sodium chloride will go into the filtrate.
  5. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness. The residue will be sodium chloride.
