Question

How would you calculate the average atomic mass of copper if 69.2% of copper has a mass of 62.93 amu and 30.8% has a mass of 64.93 amu?

Solution

Average atomic mass:

  • The Average atomic mass of an element can be calculated by adding up the masses of its isotopes, which are each multiplied by its natural abundance.
  • For calculating the average atomic mass of Copper, the natural abundance of its isotopes is given as follows;

69.2%of62.93amuforCu6330.8%of64.93amufoCu65

  • Hence the average atomic mass can be calculated as;

=(0.692x62.93)+(0.308x64.93)=63.546amu

Therefore, in the above-given way, as described, the average atomic mass of Copper can be calculated as 63.546amu
