Question

How would you confirm that a colourless liquid given to you is water?

Open in App
Solution

A given liquid can be confirmed as water by:

  • If the boiling point of the liquid comes out to be 100°C at atmospheric pressure, the liquid is water.

This is because water is a pure substance and a pure substance has a definite value of the properties like boiling point.

  • Since water is a compound and hence a pure substance, the boiling point can be checked to confirm the same.

Compound: A compound is a pure substance in which elements combine chemically in a fixed composition to give a compound.

  • They can be broken down into elements that make up the compound by using chemical or electrochemical methods.
  • Example: Water (H2O), Common salt i.e. Sodium chloride (NaCl)
