Solution

If current is drawn from the battery is I, the current through each resistor will also be I.
On applying Ohm's law to the resistors separately, we have

$V_{1} = I R_{1} V_{2} = I R_{2}$

Now, $V = V_{1} + V_{2} \Rightarrow I R = I R_{1} + I R_{2} \Rightarrow R = R_{1} + R_{2}$
