Humus is added improve the quality of soil. Why?

Humus is brown or black organic matter consisting of partially or wholly decayed plant and animal material like fallen leaves, dead plants and animals buried in the soil etc. It provides nutrients to the plants and increases the ability of soil to retain water. Fertile soil contains lots of microorganisms, which decay and decompose dead animal and plant material and thus add humus to the fertile soil.
