Mysore was only nominally a part of the Mughal empire. Nanjaraj and Devraj, the two Prime Ministers of King Krishna Raj, seized power from him and reduced him to mere figurehead. Hyder Ali, a soldier in the Mysore army, took control of the kingdom by overthrowing Nanjaraj. He died in 1782 and was succeeded by his son Tipu Sultan.
