Hydrogen chloride dissolves in water to form an acidic solution.
(a) Name the experiment which demonstrates that hydrogen chloride is very soluble in water.
(b) Give three distinct tests (apart from using an indicator) you would carry out with this solution to illustrate the typical properties of an acid.
(a)The fountain experiment demonstrates that hydrogen chloride is highly soluble in water.
(b) Disclaimer: Any three tests from the ones given below can be used.
1. Addition of lead nitrate solution: A white precipitate of lead chloride will be formed.
2. Addition of oxidising agents like MnO2, PbO2, Pb3O4, KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 to a concentrated solution: Chlorine gas is evolved; it has a pungent smell and is greenish yellow in colour.
3. Addition of metal carbonates or metal bicarbonates: Carbon dioxide gas is evolved, which turns lime water milky.
4. Action of sulphites or bisulphites: Sulphur dioxide gas is evolved, which has the smell of burning sulphur.
5. Addition of sulphides: It results in the evolution of hydrogen sulphide gas having the smell of rotten eggs.
6. Addition of thiosulphates: It results in the evolution of sulphur dioxide along with the formation of elemental sulphur.
