Solution

The ‘Bosch process’ is used to produce hydrogen by the reaction of coke with steam. The equations with conditions of ‘Bosch process’ are written below :

I. Steam is passed over the hot coke (carbon) in a special furnace to produce water gas (CO+H2). That is,

C+H2O(CO+H2) - ∆

II. Then, water gas is mixed with excess steam and passed over ferric oxide (Fe2O3) which acts as a catalyst and chromic oxide (Cr2O3) which acts as a promoter. That is,
(450C)

(CO+H2)+H2OCO2+2H2 + ∆
