Question

(i) 200cm3 of aqueous solution of a protein contains 1.26g of protein. The osmotic pressure of solution at 300K is found to be 8.3×102 bar. Calculate the molar mass of protein. (R=0.083lbarK1mol1)
(ii) What is the significance of Van't Hoff factor?

Solution

(π=w×1000M×V×R×T)

(M=w×1000π×V×R×T)

(=1.26×1000×0.083×3002.57×103×200)

=61038g(mol1)

Van toff factor is used to determine the extent of association or dissociation of solute in the solvent.

i=Normalmolecularmassobservedmolecularmass

In case of association the i value is less than one

In case of dissociation the i value is more than one

In case there is no association or dissociation the value is equals to one.
