Question

(i) Calculate the volume of air needed for the combustion of 1 kg of carbon?
(ii) Calculate the volume of carbon dioxide obtained at S.T.P by heating 8.4 g of sodium carbonate.
Na2CO3Na2O + CO2

Solution

(i) C+O2CO2
100012 100012
100012
112 kg moles of O2 are needed.
O2 consitutes 21% of air.
Total moles of air be x
x×0.21=112
x=0.396 moles
Volume occupied by air =0.396×22.4=8.8 L
(ii) Moles of Sodium carbonate =8.4106=0.08 moles
Na2CO3Na2O+CO2
0.08
0.08 0.08
Volume of CO2 at STP =0.08×22.4=1.792 Litres
