The acid which is prepared by catalytic oxidation of ammonia.

Solution

Catalytic oxidation of ammonia NH3:

  • When ammonia gas and oxygen are passed over heated platinum, a catalyst, ammonia is oxidized to form colorless nitric oxide (NO). When this gas comes in contact with air, it turns brown.
  • 4NH3(g)+5O2(g)Ptgauze800°C4NO(g)+6H2O(l)+Heat
The colorless nitric oxide (NO) is further oxidized to give dark brown fumes of nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • 2NO(g)+O2(g)2NO2(g)
This NO2 reacts with water to produce a mixture of nitric acid (HNO3) and nitrous acid (HNO2).
  • 2NO2(g)+H2O(l)HNO3(aq)+HNO2(aq)

Therefore, a mixture of nitric acid and nitrous acid is prepared by catalytic oxidation of ammonia.
