Question

Identify the Anion present in Compound Z which on reacting with dilute Sulphuric acid liberates a gas which turns lime water milky, but the gas has no effect on acidified Potassium dichromate solution?

Solution

The Anion present is Carbonate Ion,CO32-.

  • The compound Z is sodium carbonate(Na2CO3). It reacts with dil.sulphuric acid gives sodium sulphate, liberates a gas which is carbon dioxide(CO2), and water..

Na2CO3(aq) + H2SO4(aq) ⇢Na2SO4 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O(aq)

  • When carbon dioxide is passed through acidified potassium dichromate there is no change.i.e,carbon dioxide has no effect on acidified potassium dichromate.
