Question

Identify the anion present in the following compounds:

A salt D on treatment with Dilute Sulphuric acid produces a gas which turns lime water milky but no effect on acidified potassium chromate solution.

Solution

Explanation:

  • When dilute Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is added to a metallic carbonate, a colorless and odorless Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is evolved with brisk effervescence.
  • Here the metallic carbonate will be Sodium carbonate(Na2CO3).
  • The chemical reaction is as follows.

Na2CO3(s)Sodiumcarbonate+H2SO4(l)SulphuricacidNa2SO4(s)Sodiumsulphate+H2O(l)Water+CO2(g)Carbondioxide

  • Carbon dioxide gas which is going to be produced in the above chemical reaction turns lime water milky and has no effect on acidified potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) solution.
  • The chemical reaction is as follows.

Ca(OH)2(s)Calciumhydroxide+CO2(g)carbondioxideCaCO3(s)Calciumcarbonate(whiteppt)+H2O(l)Water

  • Therefore, the anion present is carbonate (CO32-) as it is detected by dilute Sulphuric acid.
