(i) Benzoic acid reacts with $P C l_{5}$ to form benzoyl chloride. Reduction with $H_{2} - P d / B a S O_{4}$ gives benzaldehdye. Reaction with alcoholic $K C N$ gives cyanohydrin.

(ii) Hydration of ethyne with $H_{2} O / H g S O_{4} / H_{2} S O_{4}$ gives acetaldehyde. Hydrogenation in presence of Ni catalyst gives ethanol. On heating with conc sulphuric acid at $140^{o} C$ , diethyl ether is obtained.
