Identify the following labeled parts of pituitary gland _____.
I.Anterior lobe II.Posterior lobe
The pituitary is a tiny gland, the smallest endocrine gland weighing in at about only 1 to 3 grams. It is nestled in a tiny bony cavity in the skull called the sella turcica. It has two major lobes, an anterior lobe known as the adenohypophysis or pars distalis, and posterior lobe also known as the neurophysis or pars nervosa. There is also a small intermediate lobe in between the two. The anterior lobe is named adenohypophysis because, adeno, is the prefix that denotes gland. This lobe is responsible for production of pituitary hormones. The posterior lobe is named neurohypophysis because it receives and stores the hypothalamic hormones transported through the neurohypophyseal tract, which is essentially a bundle of nerves.
