Water from water bodies is converted into water vapours and rises in the air. Vapours condense to form clouds. When the clouds get heavy, precipitation takes place.
Basically, any product formed due to condensation of atmospheric water vapour falls under precipitation. Raindrops, hailstones and snow are forms of precipitation.
