Solution

Cell membrane:

  1. Cytoplasm of cells is enclosed in a phospholipid bilayer called cell membrane or plasma membrane.
  2. The formation of plasma membrane is called biogenesis of cell membrane.

Biogenesis of cell membrane:

  1. Biogenesis of cell membrane involves the synthesis of proteins and lipids.
  2. Nucleus is the control centre of the cell and it directs the synthesis of the cell membrane.
  3. Ribosomes are tiny granular particles which act as the site of protein synthesis.
  4. Ribosomes are found attached to the endoplasmic reticulum and this type of ER is called rough endoplasmic reticulum.
  5. Rough endoplasmic reticulum help in the transport of synthesised protein.
  6. The endoplasmic reticulum which is devoid of ribosomes is called smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
  7. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is concerned with the synthesis of phospholipids which is the major component of plasma membrane.
  8. Golgi bodies are membrane-bound spaces located near the endoplasmic reticulum.
  9. The synthesised proteins and lipids from endoplasmic reticulum are transported to the golgi apparatus.
  10. Golgi apparatus help in the packaging of formed proteins and lipids.
  11. Vesicles are membrane-bound bodies of golgi apparatus.
  12. Vesicles help in the transport of proteins and lipids into or out of the cell.

Final answer:

Step 1: Nucleus instructs the cell to start membrane biogenesis.

Step 2: Ribosomes are the sites of protein synthesis.

Step 3: The Rough ER is responsible for transporting the synthesised proteins.

Step 4:The smooth ER helps in synthesis of lipids.

Step 5: The Golgi apparatus helps in packaging and dispatching the synthesised lipids and proteins.

Step 6: Vesicles are sac-like structures that help in the transport of proteins and lipids into or out of the cell.
