Question

Identify X, Y and Z in the following equations :
i) Cu+CO2moisture−−−−−−−− Green compound (X)
ii) Ag+Yair−−−− Black compound (Ag2S)
iii) FeSO4heat−−−−−Fe2O3+SO3+Z

Solution

(i) A reaction of copper with carbon dioxide and moisture forms copper(II) carbonate which is green in colour. Reaction is as follows:
Cu+CO2Moisture−−−−−−−−CuCO3
(ii) Silver sulfide (Ag2S) is the sulfide of silver. Silver sulfide is insoluble in all solvents but is degraded by strong acids. It has an ionic bond, as it is made up of silver (electronegativity = 1.98) and sulfur (electronegativity = 2.58). 2Ag+SAir−−−−−Ag2S.
(iii) On heating, ferrous sulphate crystals lose water and anhydrous ferrous sulphate is formed. So their colour changes from light green to white. On further heating, anhydrous ferrous sulphate decomposes to form ferric oxide, sulphur dioxide, and sulphur trioxide. FeSO4Heat−−−−−−Fe2O3+SO3+SO2
