If 0.5 moles of BaCl2 is mixed with 0.2 moles ofNa3PO4 the maximum number of moles ofBa3(PO4)2 that can be formed
Answer is 0.10
This problem is based on the concept of limiting reagent. Write a balanced equation. Find out the limiting reagent using above values
3BaCl2 + 2Na3PO4 → Ba3(PO4)2 + 6NaCl
Here 3 mole of barium chloride reacts with 2 moles of sodium phosphate. Therefore 0.3 moles of barium chloride will react with 0.2 moles of sodium phosphate. By this time 0.2 moles of barium chloride is still present which states that sodium phosphate is a limiting reagent.
Now the amount of products will be determined by the limiting reagent that is sodium phosphate.
From the above equation 2 moles of sodium phosphate produces 1 mole of barium phosphate so 0.2 moles of sodium phosphate gives 0.10 moles of barium phosphate.
