Question

If 1 mole of a diatomic gas present in 10L vessel at certain temperature exert a pressure of 0.96atm. Under similar conditions, an ideal gas exerted 1.0atm pressure. If the volume of the gas molecule is negligible. Then, the value of Van der Waals' constant "a" is _____ atmL2/mol2.

Solution

If volume of gas molecule is negligible, then gas equation is Pideal=Preal+a×n2V2,

Here V is 10 and n is 1.

So, 1=0.96+a100

a=4.
