Question

If 10 volumes of dihydrogen gas react with five volumes of dioxygen gas, how many volumes of water vapor would be produced?

Open in App
Solution

Identification of chemical reaction

The chemical reaction for the given process is:-

H2+O2H2O(g)

Balancing the chemical reaction.

Now, balance the above reaction . The balanced reaction can be given as –
2H2(g)+O2(g)2H2O(g)

Finding the amount of the product from stoichiometry

From Avogadro’s law, at same temperature and pressure, the ratio of moles of gases is same as ratio of their volumes. So, it can be observed that two volumes of dihydrogen react with one volume of dioxygen to produce two volumes of water vapor. As the reactants are in stoichiometric amount, the volume of water vapor produced is equal to the volume of H2 gas reacted.
So, 10 volumes of water vapour is produced by 10 volumes of the H2 gas.

Final answer : 10 volumes of dihydrogen will react with five volumes of dioxygen to produce 10 volumes of water vapor.
