$a^{2} + 4 a + x = (a + 2)^{2}$

$a^{2} + 4 a + x = a^{2} + 4 a + 4$

$x = a^{2} + 4 a + 4 - a^{2} - 4 a$

$x = 4$

$∴$ the value of x is 4.
