If a parallelogram and a triangle are on the same base and between the same parallels, then the area of triangle is half the area of parallelogram. In the adjoining figure, parallelogram ABCD and triangle ABD are on the same base AB and between the same parallels AF and DC.

Therefore, area of triangle ABD = 12×area of parallelogram ABCD

= 12×(AB×AE);
