Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidium.
If a pregnant woman is suffering from syphilis infection then the bacteria crosses the placenta and infect the fetus.
IgG can cross placenta but IgM cannot due to its large size, but IgM is the first antibody which is produced in response to any infection in the body.
So, after delivery IgM and IgG type of antibodies may be present in her new born.
