Question

If an element X is placed in group 14, what will be the formula and the nature of bonding of its chloride?

Solution

Properties of the element X in group 14:-

  • As the element is in group 14, it means that it has 4 electrons in its outermost shell.
  • Thus it has a valency of 4.
  • Now as it has 4 electrons, thus it neither can donate the 4 electrons nor gain 4 electrons in order to achieve octet state.
  • So it will share those 4 electrons with other elements and thus form a covalent bond.
  • For example if it reacts with Chlorine, it will form a compound like XCl4, and the nature of the bond will be covalent bonds.
