Solution

If the Bhratiya Jana Sangh or the Communist Party had formed the government after the first general elections in 1952, the policies of government would have been different in the following aspects:

Bhartiya Jana Sangh

a. The Bhartiya Jana Sangh had a hard core nationalist ideology that believed in one country, one culture and one nation. The party would have replaced English with Hindi for official purposes as it called for upholding India’s traditions and cultures.

b. The party was also opposed to granting concessions to religious and cultural minorities and was against this policy of appeasement.

c. The party would have worked towards bringing about the reunion of India and Pakistan in its vision of Akhand Bharat.

d. The party would have prioritised India’s defence strategy in countering China’s move after 1964 and would have carried and developed nuclear weapons after Chinese’s test.

Communist Party

a. The Communist Party was based on the Bolshevik ideology, working towards the welfare of workers and masses. It was driven by Socialist ideology and would have preferred a strong state control over means of production.

b. As the party was popular in states like West Bengal, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, it would have advocated the use of English and would have argued against the imposition of Hindi in non-Hindi speaking states.

c. The party would have led armed rebellion and struggle in order to meet its objectives and would have waged a struggle against landed elites as it did in Telengana, Tripura and Kerela

d. The party, instead of a mixed economy model, would have followed a hard core socialist ideology with full state control.

e. The Communist Party would not have favoured nuclear test and induction of nuclear weapons as it was committed to bringing about universal disarmament.
