We know eiθ=cosθ+isinθ

x=cosα+isinα=eiα

and y=cos(β)+isin(β)=eiβ

now we have, xy=ei(αβ)

similarly, 1xy=ei(αβ)

So, xy+1xy=cos(αβ)+isin(αβ)+cos((αβ))+isin((αβ))

xy+1xy=cos(αβ)+isin(αβ)+cos(αβ)isin(αβ)=2cos(αβ)
