Question

If girl of mass 3.5kgclimbs up from the first floor of the building at a height 4m above the ground to the third floor at height 12m above the ground. What will be the increase in gravitational potential energy? (Take, g=10ms2)

Solution

Given data:

Mass, m=3.5kg,

Gravitational force, g=10ms2

Height at first floor, h1=4m

Height at second floor, h2=12m

Gravitational potential energy at 1st floor

PE1=mgh1

PE1=3.5×10×4

PE1=140J

Gravitational potential energy at 2nd floor

PE2=mgh1

PE2=3.5×10×12

PE2=420J

Increase in potential energy

By differentiating the potential energy at 1stfloor from potential energy at 2nd floor we get the increase in potential energy.

PEincrease=PE2-PE1

PEincrease=420-140

PEincrease=280J

The increase in gravitational potential energy is 280J
