Let ρm, hm and ρw, hw be the densities and heights of the columns of mercury and water respectively.
Let P0 be the atmospheric pressure.
For mercury:
P0=ρmghm
For water:
P0=ρwghw

ρmghm=ρwghw
hw=ρmhmρw (1)
Given, specific gravity of mercury is 13.6. Hence,
ρmρw=13.6
Substituting in (1) we get:
hw=13.6×76 cm
hw=1033.6 cm
