Solution

  1. The cathode is the negatively charged electrode and the Anode is the positively charged electrode.
  2. In X3Y2, X is positively charged and Y is negatively charged.
  3. Since oppositely charged species attract each other X will move towards the Cathode and Y will move towards Anode.
  4. So element X will be obtained at the Cathode electrode.
  5. And Y will be obtained at the Anode electrode.

If the compound formed between Y and X is melted and electricity is passed through the compound, the element X will be obtained at the Cathode and Y at the Anode of the electrolytic cell.
